Research and Planning: Draft of Magazine Cover

This is my first draft of my magazine cover and this is what i am aiming to use this layout.

I have now change my Masthead and is now called Rockafella instead of RIOT!

Research and Planning: Prop List For Music Magazine

For my college magazine i will be using:
  • Camera
  • Photoshop
  • Indesign
  • Garageband
  • Guitar
  • Models
  • Indie Style Clothing
These are the props that i will be using to ensure that my music magazine is created to a high level.

Research and Planning: test shots

These are my test shots. I am looking into using some of the images but i wont be using all of them as these are taken in a rural areas and i would like to take some in more industrial areasB but it is the type of props that i will be using for my magazine.

Research and Planning: Costume Ideas

These images are the typical people i would be taking shots of. The clothing that they wear are casual and typical of the genre what i am going to use. The first is a casual and what people where in there every day life , just to show that they don't spend loads of money on smart clothing and they dont think they are better than everyone else. It also helps them to be role models as teenagers would want to wear the same clothing and buy the same brands as what they wear.

Research and Planning: Masthead Fonts

These are the fonts that I am going to choose from and also the title which I am going to use for my magazine, but I am not sure if it will be Lets Riot! or Riot!
These Fonts are going to be the fonts i will choose from for my masthead.

Research and Planning: Analysis on a Double Page Spread

This is an example of a double page spread from the Kerrang magazine.

  • First of all the Images that have been shown are of the band in which they are going to be interviewing or talking about.
  • Also the colours that have been used for the images, are also used for the text and the shapes which are used.
  • The images on the double page spread are of all the band members, but as you can see the most important person, the singer in the My Chemical Romance has the biggest image and all the other band members have no so big images. The Main Image is more of a Long Shot and the other images are medium close-ups. Also they relate to the copy as they will be more fixed on the main singer rather than the other group members
  • The mast head that is being used, represents on what they will be talking about and which band they are talking about
  • The text is put into columns so they can fit more text on and also there is another column which is irrelevant to the main columns but is relevant to the band.
  • The genre of this is more Rock as it is in the magazine Kerrang and the band is Rock band.

Research and Planning: Analysing Contents Page

This is a contents page of a music magazine and you can tell this buy firstly the mast head at the top of the page. also the pictures on the page represent what the magazine will be featuring in later pages, and also on the left hand side of the page there are sub headings with information which they will be talking about. The pictures on the Page are different from a Long Shots and Wide shots to show the locations and you can tell from the pictures the genre is Rock, Indie style but one thing you cannot really ell the the age which it is aimed at.

Research and Planning: Target Audience

This picture to the left of us is a typical person that will read the magazine i am going to produce.

The target audience that I am going to use for my music magazine will be:
  • It is going to be towards 16-19 year old, which are usually in college or doing an apprenticeship
  • My magazine will be looking towards both genders as it will be talking about the bands in the particular genre with both male and female bands.
  • the music magazine I am going to produce will be aimed at people who are students, got a part time job, or is on an apprenticeship which are semi skilled. also unemployed people will be aimed at but from my questionnaire results people are either in a part time job or are still in education
  • The magazine will be people who enjoy the genre of rock music as from my questionnaire results, the majority of people liked rock or indie music the most.
  • The Wealth of people are usually got a part time job so they can afford to go gigs etc
  • and also the magazine will be targeted at people who have got good chance that people will have a successful life and people who would like to live life to the full, within reason.

Research and Planning: Analysing Two Music Magazines

This is the music magazine called Kerrang which i am going to be analyzing.
  • First of all the main image is of a person that is well known in the rock music business so you know that it is a rock magazine and would stand out towards people who like rock music. The shot that has been taken is a medium close up towards
the Main person in the band.
  • The Mast Head is at the top of the page but you cannot see all the of it so i presume that this magazine has been out quite along time so people do not need to see the whole mast head. Also the font of the magazine is is bold and mostly black and white, as these colours are mostly used on rock magazines.
  • The layout is very well planned out and also has not much space but is effective as you can see all the text clearly.
  • Again in the Main image, it shows the main character putting two fingers u which could show that its is not really aimed at children under 14 years of age but anyone above who likes the genre of music.
  • In the Sub headings, all of them are related to rock bands in some way or another, and as you also should notice that the bigger font of PARAMORE it is related to the main image of the women who is in that band.

This is my second music magazine I am analyzing which is NME.

  • Again the main image is of the main topic that will be issued, which is to bring the reader in as they are a very famous band.Just from the image you can tell it is more of a Rock Magazine. You can also see its a two shot with the main band members in the shot.
  • As you can see the Mast Head is at the top of the page, but you cannot see all of it, which gives an indication that it is a well known magazine so everyone should notice which magazine it is.
  • As you can see the Sub heading is also with the main image, and that is why is bolder and bigger than all the other text. it also has a little bit of information on what topic they will be talking about to the band.
  • At the bottom of the page, there are other images and text about the other issues and topics that will also be in the magazine.
  • The colour of the magazine relates to the images and the text stands out so the colours were chosen perfectly

Research and Planning: Camera Shots

These are the camera shots that i could use in my magazine. i have now learnt what type of camera shots i could use. In the images i described all the shots and what they consist of.

Research and Planning: Preliminary Task Evaluation

This is my College magazine. As you can see it is still pretty plain, but i am still learning and it had to be done within 2 weeks.

My likes of this magazine is the colours that I have used in this magazine are in good effect as you are able to read each text clearly and when on a shelf, the cover would stand out and would get people to look at the cover. On the Contents, it has a lot of images on the page which is showing what will be in the magazine as images are more interesting than text.

My dislikes of the magazine is at the bottom of the cover, it is rather plain and if I had more time I would make sure that information would be there and use the space appropriately. my dislikes on the contents page is the text is all over the place and not in real order, so next time i could make it more formal and easy to read.

The college magazine does look like a typical magazine and contents page as it has a mast head at the top of the page, then there is a medium shot image which takes a lot of the space on the magazine, and then we have sub-headings going around all over the cover. On the contents page, there is text around the whole of the page then images that are relevant to the text which is being displayed.

For my cover, I used Photoshop, and I chose the write font for the type of magazine i was going to produce. I put an image from what we went and took in the college to make it relevant to a college magazine. I then used used the text box to put text around the page and then made it more interesting making the boxes into different shapes.

For my Contents page, I used Indesign to design my page. It is quite simple my page but i just added a few images in relevance to the headings that are going to be in the magazine. i put another mast head at the top of the page and more headings around the page. i put the images around the page to fill the gaps and make it more appealing.

Research and Planning: Imaginary Fonts

These are the fonts that I found off a website called Dafont. I think these fonts that I have chose represent and are related to the words. Popworld is really a funky word so i thought that the font i have chosen represents the funkiness with with bubbled writing. Death Metal I think has the right font as it is to do with death and dark words. Also Popcorn is really simple and that is what i have put a simple font with a little of of bubbly in it, which popcorn is a little bit bubbly.

Research and Planning: Semiotics Research

Semiotics is a process in media studies that studies signs such as:

  • Colour of text
  • Type of font
  • Background Colour
  • Image
  • The shapes and areas on the cover
These signs are to show what the world is like in that magazine and it helps you to read between the lines and would make you want to read on with the images and the colour in that magazine. they choose bright colours in the masthead and also sub headings so it brings people closer to read the magazine. Also they have put a big image on the cover of someone at college would know and want to find out why he's on the cover of the magazine. They use sub headings with college based themes so you can tell that it is a college magazine and also the Masthead has a big heading of College which shouts out to all college students.

Research and Planning: Target Audience for College Magazine

My college magazine would be towards:
  • 16-21 year olds as people are mostly at this age when in college
  • The gender i would use would be Male/Female as the stories would be linked to both. The story lines could be sport, Lessons, the lifestyle of the college and also the upcoming events which students would want to know about
  • All the enrichments that they are interested in such as driving theory, Sports, Dance
  • I would target to GCSE students who are interested in at this specific college and also the A levels which they could be doing and how the A level Students are finding it here
  • This magazine would be aimed at working to middle class students.

Research and Planning: Examples of Medium Close Ups

These are examples of medium closes-ups which you can tell that they are by the photographer capturing from the stomach and upwards

Research and Planning: Analysis of College Magazine

This magazine is a typical college magazine. You can tell it is by:
  • The masthead which says College Lifestyle.
  • The picture is a Supermodel which a lot of college students are interested in as all college students would like to be someone who has money or success.
  • The story lines on the front cover are to do with the new technology such as the apple ipad and also it has subheadings including the university of south florida and the use of a professor
  • The masthead is quite simple and the colour scheme is colourful to catch the students eye
  • Also the barcode is on and the price is on as well which shows a typical magazine.

Research and Planning: Indesign Tutorial

This was my first time on indesign. My attempt was at a film review on District 9. I made this on a programme that i have never used before so it took a while on figuring out how to use it.

I started by finding a review of District 9 on the Empire magazine and copying it to a word document. I then had to open indesign and change the background colour. I put a title of District 9 at the top of the page and then I put columns to make it a proper music column in a magazine. I then pasted the review from the word document onto indesign but i was having trouble on putting them into the three columns but it was overcome. I then had to find a picture on District 9 from google and copy it onto indesign in the small area for a picture. After that we changed the text by putting drop shadows in and changing the colour. to make it more professional, we made borders around the text and also made it more neat and tidy. finally we changed the gradient on the background which again i had trouble of doing but i also overcame that as well.

This was my second lesson on Photoshop and we added text of our Media Studies and put a certain type of text and also change the colour of the text. we then had to put the text in the centre of the page. Next we had to change the background colour to blue and then put a drop shadow on the piece of text but i was unable to do it. Then we had to add a picture and change the hair colour underneath the text and we also had to put a border round the piece of work but again i was unable to do it.

Research and Planning: Introduction to Photoshop (CD Cover)

Here we started our introduction to Photoshop on making a CD cover.  As this is my first time using photoshop, I learnt the basic things of Photoshop such as, I managed to get a CD picture onto a background and faded the CD so you can still see the background which i changed the colour too and also added some text to the cover. I also added musical notes to the cover to make it more relevant to the topic we was doing which was music CD.

WELCOME TO MY BLOG !! :D
